Brittany Olivier Townend, Laura Collet and Tom McEwen were in a league of their own when they won the eventing team gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at Baji Koen Equestrian Park. It was their country’s fourth team title, but the wait has been very long since Richard meade, Mary gordon watson, Bridget parker and Marc Phillips was on the top step of the podium 49 years ago Munich in 1972. Australia won silver tonight, while the reigning champions of France claimed bronze.
And germany Julia krajewski entered the equestrian history books as the very first female athlete to win the Olympic Individual Eventing title. The last time the Games were held in Tokyo in 1964, the the United States Lana du Pont was the first woman to compete in the three-day event, so the women’s firsts and the Tokyo Olympics seem to be intrinsically linked.
In the battle for the remaining places of the individual podium, it was Brittany Tom McEwen who took the money while australia Andrew Hoy won bronze. Hoy’s result is nothing short of sensational as the three-time team gold medalist has an impressive record of appearing at eight Olympic Games dating back to Los Angeles in 1984. He was only 25 then, and today at age 62, he is more competitive than ever.
Tom McEwen paved the way for Brittany team victory with a superb round of Toledo of Kresker during the first that of Santiago Varela beautifully decorated tracks tonight. However teammate Laura Collet had a scary moment when London 52 backed up past the fence four water trough and scattered poles all over the place before regaining her balance.
The individual final was really captivating as the top 25 beat him. from Japan Kazuma tomoto only collected 0.4 penalty when he was seventh to last with the beautiful Vinci de la Vigne, and when from France Christopher six foul at the end of the triple combination on the new course Tomoto began to climb in order.
Colletts’ bay gelding left the last two fences on the ground, but when Hoy called with a clear round, the top three had absolutely no respite. Last entry, Krajewski could have been completely overwhelmed but kept her cool to deliver a fabulous ride from the mare she calls Mandy. She would climb to the top step of the podium and her place in equestrian history, ahead of McEwen and Hoy in silver and bronze.
