Tokina has announced a series of new lenses expected this year for the APS-C Sony and Fujifilm mirrorless cameras. This is good news, given the current relative lack of third-party lenses for Sony and Fujifilm APS-C systems. Next summer we can expect three new main lenses for Sony E-mount cameras: an atx-m 23mm f / 1.4, atx-m 33mm f / 1.4 and atx-m 56 mm f / 1.4. This same trio of prime numbers should be released in Fujifilm X-mount-fit in the fall.
This announcement follows a recent trend by third-party lens manufacturers to adopt previously under-supported systems with new optics of choice, including the launch by Sigma of its contemporary 16mm, 30mm and 56mm f / lenses. 1.4 DC DN for Canon M-mount cameras.
And it’s not just the Sony APS-C shooters that Tokina will impress this fall. The company is also expected to launch two new Sony full-frame FE mount lenses for the A7 and A9 cameras. Expect to see atx-m 35mm f / 1.8 and atx-m 50mm f / 1.8 lenses joining the recently launched atx-m 85mm f / 1.8 portrait lens – a goal we recently reviewed and came out very impressed.
Finally, Tokina has not forgotten about DSLR cameras, as it will also be releasing a new atx-i lens for Canon and Nikon APS-C DSLRs this summer. The next atx-i 11-20 mm f / 2.8 will join the latest macro optics atx-i 11-16 mm f / 2.8 and atx-i 100 mm f / 2.8. Although atx-i lenses are essentially re-releases of existing AT-X Pro models, but with restyled lens barrels, we expect the 11-20mm f / 2.8 atx-i to share the same optical path than Tokina’s existing AT-X 11-20mm f / 2.8 Pro.
No technical details have been revealed on these next atx-m lenses, but if their performance is comparable to that of Tokina excellent opera 50 mm, we are in for a treat.
