It started with a clutch save, but it was about as good as Tiger Wood’s third round would get at the 2022 PGA Championship. Eventually signing for a 9 of 79, the 15-time major champion slumped at the midway through his inning and couldn’t gain momentum around Southern Hills on Saturday.

After posting a respectable 1 over his first five holes, Woods looked set to hold his own against the cold, windy conditions in Tulsa, Oklahoma, despite others on the course struggling. However, everything would soon change.

A missed club off the par-3 sixth tee was the beginning of the end as the 46-year-old’s golf ball found the penalty area; he eventually tapped for a triple bogey. Errors snowballed from there as Woods bogeyed on six of his next seven holes.

“I couldn’t get off the bogey train there or any other train too,” Woods said. “Like I said, I just didn’t – I didn’t do anything good. I didn’t land a lot of good shots. Therefore, I ended up with a pretty high score.”

Tiger was in danger of posting the worst score of his major league career; however, as he has every time he played competitive golf this year, Tiger kept fighting no matter the circumstances.

A long-range birdie on the par-4 15th put Woods at 9 for his round and 12 for the championship. Playing his last five holes at 1 under, he avoided another entry into the dreaded ’80 club’ as he has done only twice before in his major championship career.

Woods’ 9 of 79 will be the third-worst round of his major career and the fifth-worst of his professional career.

Tiger currently finds himself tied for 76th with only one name below his in the standings. He’ll start early Sunday morning in one of the first groups in the final round, but you better think Woods will still be fighting until the very end.
