Thomas Tuchel said the linesman apologized after Bayern Munich saw a late equalizer at Real Madrid controversially not awarded.

After Joselu scored two late goals off the bench for Madrid in their stunning turnaround in the Champions League semi-final, Bayern thought they had sent the tie into extra time.

An offside call from the linesman before De Ligt scored meant the goal did not stand.

In the 13th minute of stoppage time of the second half, Matthijs de Ligt scored in the area but referee Szymon Marciniak signaled offside just before.

Bayern’s celebrations quickly turned into protests, with replays showing it was a very close call against Noussair Mazraoui, but the linesman’s early flag prevented the VAR from controlling it.

It led to the German giants crashing out of the Champions League in dramatic circumstances and boss Tuchel expressing his frustrations at the manner in which they were defeated.

Talk to TNT Sportshe said: “A disastrous decision by the linesman and the referee… it almost feels like a betrayal in the end because of that decision.”

He later added: “The linesman apologized but that doesn’t help. At this kind of level, raising the flag in a decision like this, a close decision at the last minute.

“And the referee too, the referee doesn’t need to whistle. He sees that we win the second ball, he sees that we shoot. Whistling is a very, very bad decision.

“It’s against the rules and it’s a bad decision on their part, it’s a disaster. It’s hard to swallow but it is what it is.”

De Ligt was also angered by the decision, as he stated be in sports: “I think it’s a big, big, big mistake. Whether it’s offside or not, I don’t know, you can check it but if you don’t check it, how can you see it? “

He added: “The linesman said to me: ‘Sorry, I made a mistake.’ Yeah, I’m not buying anything from that.”

The defeat marks a sad end to Tuchel’s tenure in charge of Bayern before his summer departure, as the club completely missed out on silverware this season.

They notably lost the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen and therefore failed to win the German top flight for the first time in 12 years.

Winning the Champions League was also something they had to fight for this season and after a 2-2 draw in the first leg, they took the lead in the second leg thanks to Alphonso Davies.

But Madrid substitute Joselu was on hand to capitalize on a Manuel Neuer error two minutes from time to equalize.

He then scored again three minutes later, with the striker ruled narrow from Antonio Rudiger’s cross from the left after a VAR check for the winner in a 4-3 aggregate victory.

As a result, Bayern were eliminated from the Champions League despite finishing first.

Offside drama followed into stoppage time to cap another dramatic evening of Champions League football.

Madrid now have the chance to win a record 15th title when they face Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium on June 1.
