It may be the offseason, but there’s no shortage of important news for Virginia’s men’s basketball program, from recruiting updates to practice clips as the team begins its preparations for the season. Every Friday, we’ll post a roundup covering all the latest headlines about the Cavaliers of the week.
Most of the news this week is about recruiting, where several Class of 2023 prospects have included Virginia in their latest cuts.
Just a week after making an offer to Trey Green (Mooresville, NC), the four-star point guard included Virginia in his top five with Xavier, LSU, VCU and Miami. He is expected to announce his decision on Saturday. Green didn’t visit UVA, so he’s unlikely to pick the Cavaliers. Xavier is the big favourite.
On Friday, Virginia made it into the top three for four-star winger Jamie Kaiser, one of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s top prospects. The Burke, Va., native narrowed his offer slate from nearly 40 programs to the bottom three from UVA, Indiana and Maryland. All three schools welcomed Kaiser on official visits this summer, but the Terrapins were the first to land his commitment when he announced his decision on Sunday, August 7.
The Cavaliers are finalists for five recruiting targets in the Class of 2023. In addition to Kaiser and Green, Virginia made top rosters for four-star combo guard Freddie Dilione (Raleigh, NC), four-star combo guard Taison Chatman ( Minneapolis, MN) and four-star winger Andrej Stojakovic (Carmichael, CA).
UVA hosted several recruiting targets on Grounds this week in each of the 2023, 2024 and 2025 classes.
6’3″ combo guard Elijah Gertrude (Jersey City, NJ), one of Virginia’s top targets in the Class of 2023, made an official visit to UVA last week. He holds offers from Kansas , Syracuse, St. John’s, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, and others.
Three 2024 targets also visited UVA in the past few days and each walked away with scholarship offers: 6’5″ shooter Jaeden Mustaf (Matthews, North Carolina), 6’5″ combo guard ‘4″ Jayden “Juke” Harris (Salisbury, NC) and 6’7″ winger Caleb Williams (Washington, DC) were all offered by Tony Bennett and the Cavaliers this week.
Colt Langdon, a 6’8″ winger from Raleigh, North Carolina in the Class of 2025, took a leap forward in his recruiting process by heading to UVA on Wednesday.
Langdon and the other visitors this week were able to practice as Virginia prepares for her 10-day exhibition tour of Italy next week. The Cavaliers will play four exhibition games from August 10-20.
On Friday, UVA’s (scout/training team) “Green Machine” featured a star-studded cast, with former Mamadi Diakite, Anthony Gill, Sam Hauser and Jay Huff returning to Grounds to help with training.
