While vegetables are generally known for their positive impact on metabolism, it is important to note that certain vegetables can have a surprising effect: they can slow down metabolism.
We spoke to Rahul Malpe, certified nutritionist, to find out the vegetable that can slow down your metabolism and increase waistline. Malpe revealed that potatoes are the one to watch out for.
Potato
Potatoes, a staple in many diets, are a versatile and beloved vegetable. However, their excessive consumption may be linked to a potential slowdown in metabolism and an increase in waist size. Potatoes are starchy and high in carbohydrates, especially when prepared as mashed potatoes, fries or chips. These refined carbohydrates can cause blood sugar levels to spike and then crash, potentially disrupting the body’s metabolic processes over time.
“Potatoes contain a compound called acrylamide, which forms when potatoes are cooked at high temperatures, such as in frying or baking. Acrylamide is known to disrupt metabolism and cause fat buildup around from the waist, also called visceral fat,” says Malpe.
Additionally, high-calorie preparations often lead to overeating, thereby contributing to weight gain. To maintain a healthy metabolism and waistline, it is advisable to consume potatoes in moderation and opt for healthier cooking methods, such as roasting or boiling, to minimize their impact on health metabolic.
