The VAR intervention saw Olivier Giroud’s astonishing bicycle against Atletico Madrid to give Chelsea the upper hand in their Champions League clash.
The Blues won a 1-0 win in the first leg of their last 16 draw, which was played in Bucharest, and they have to thank VAR.
Olivier Giroud scored a superb bike kick against Atletico Madrid
The Frenchman shot an overhead kick after the ball was played on his way.
Initially given offside, Mason Mount having considered that the player had sent the ball to Giroud, a review of the effort saw the decision overturned.
TalkSPORT’s team of commentators, consisting of Danny Mills and Sam Matterface, praised the way the officials handled the situation.
Giroud gave Chelsea the upper hand in the tie
Mills said, “I told you it’s going to have to be a world and that’s what it is. The ball popped up and it’s an incredible finish from Giroud.
“He’s only touched the ball about five times this game.
“I was very complementary to the officials, they were very precise and it was very difficult to say (who touched him).”
Matterface added, “They did a great job there. This is how VAR is supposed to work. They handled it well and there was no confusion. It was pretty clear that they had a long discussion about this.
Joao Felix tried a bike kick but was not as successful as Giroud
It was a close game in Bucharest with Thomas Tuchel’s side enjoying a lot of possession but struggling to break Atletico.
Mason Mount and Jorginho both received yellow cards and will now be suspended for the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
Giroud’s sixth goal of the Champions League campaign has so far given the Blues the advantage.
