Most of the time when Apple hacks make the rounds, they aren’t really This impressive. Often the definition of the word “hack” is stretched somewhat (why, yeah, I knew I could use my MacBook to email). But every once in a while, we see something awesome lurking in plain sight.
A Twitter user shared a simple screen recording showing how Preview on macOS is able to remove the background from an image, just like the iPhone, with the question “Did I live under the rock?” . Judging from the answers, the area under said rock has a very large population. (Want to try it for yourself? Check out the best MacBook Pro deals.)

Davey Heuser’s screen recording shows that all the user has to do in the preview is right-click the file, select Quick Actions, and click Remove Background. That’s it. And just like iPhone’s stunning photo cutout feature, Preview is able to detect and isolate the subject of the image.
“What, was it possible all the time?” One user comments, while another adds, “A year after buying it, I’m still discovering what my Mac can do.” Indeed, almost every week, it turns out that an awesome macOS feature is hiding right in front of us. From long-exposure photos to Siri-powered Harry Potter spells, the internet is almost constantly discovering new hacks.
