Eternals was released as part of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and introduced a new group of superheroes for the first time. The Eternals are a group of ancient aliens who have lived among humans for thousands of centuries, protecting Earth from their adversaries, the Deviants. Eternals was directed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao.
The film saw an ensemble of actors join Marvel including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harrington and others. In 2023, the studio releases Eternals from Marvel Studios: the art of the filmwhich details behind-the-scenes and in-depth interviews with the creative team.

Which makes Eternals Different from Avengers?
Eternals was released to an audience that wasn’t ready to let go of Earth’s superheroes, the Avengers. The film received mixed reviews and drew criticism for its storyline and pacing. Although the film was visually stunning, it became one of the lowest-grossing MCU films, earning $402 million at the worldwide box office. But Eternals has much more potential than Avengers and in the recently released book, Marvel Executives explains why.
According to the leaders, Eternals was a difficult film to make. First, it had to be different from what Avengers was. Although it handled the theme differently, the film also aimed for visuals unprecedented in other Marvel films. Second, unlike Avengerswhich established each superhero before grouping them together, this film featured all the superheroes in one film.
Eternals it turned out that it had nothing to do with the Avengers. In fact, the team of super-aliens possessed the power to pool their energy to make each member more powerful than their current selves. While the Avengers worked so well through their teamwork, the alien superheroes fought their ultimate villain with the help of their combined minds or Uni-Mind. This makes them more powerful than all of the Avengers combined.

How does Uni-Mind for Eternals work?
Marvel executives explained the look of Uni-Mind and how the concept was depicted in the film. The Uni-Mind functioned as a “amplification device” which could strengthen the superpowers of each member. According to the leaders, when the team pooled their energy, Makkari could run faster than ever and Druig could control every mind on the planet. Nate Moore, a studio executive, shared in the book (via The Direct):
“The Uni-Mind allows Eternals to amplify the power of any Eternal. However, to do this, they all need to be somewhat connected. They can’t be on opposite ends of the world and create a Uni-Mind – they have to be close to each other. But it could allow Makkari to run faster than ever. This could allow Druig to control all the minds on a planet. It is an amplification device but it requires the power of all the Eternals combined.
The Uni-Mind also justified the direct team-up film, instead of standalone introductions for the characters. This could also be one of the recurring themes if the studio moves forward with another film. However, Marvel’s sequel plans are unclear at this time and fans will have to wait to see if the characters appear in any of the other announced Marvel projects.
