This $19 white wine delivers a lively twist in every sip

This week we offer you two old-fashioned white wines: a blend of several Alsatian grape varieties and a classic Napa Valley chardonnay. To vary the pleasures, we have a sparkling pet-nat from Italy, made according to the ancestral method, whose fermentation ends in the bottle.

Maison Robert Olivier Petite Naturelle Cuvée de Saison 2021

(3 stars)

Maison Robert Olivier is a natural wine company from Alsatian producer Jean Biecher. The house partners with small organic producers in Alsace and elsewhere in France, while the wines are certified biodynamic and made with minimal intervention in winemaking. The Cuvée Saison is an edelzwicker, a blend of riesling, gewurztraminer, sylvaner, pinot gris, pinot blanc and muscat in an old-fashioned Alsatian style intended for a simple drink. This one, however, is electric with bright acidity and copious fruits and spices. Well done! Certified biodynamic. Alcohol by volume: 13 percent. Bottle weight: 450 grams (Light).

Trefethen Family Vineyards Oak Knoll District Chardonnay 2021

(3.5 stars)

Napa Valley, California, $28

Trefethen maintains a classic California style in his chardonnay, before the Cali chard becomes all sweet and buttery, supported by excessive new oak. Expect notes of citrus peel, peach skin, apricot and wild herbs wrapped around a core of acidity that gives the wine precise focus. Barrel aging imparts a toasted character and rich texture without dominating the fruit. ABV: 13.1 percent. Body weight: 595 grams (average).

Distributed locally by Breakthru Beverage Group.

Medici Ermete Phermento Lambrusco di Sorbara 2022

(3 stars)

Lambrusco, a sparkling red wine from Italy, goes perfectly with barbecues, charcuterie and pizza, but it hasn’t really been in vogue since the 1970s. With Phermento, Medici Ermete jumps into the trend with a sparkling wine pet-nat way. It is a strawberry-colored rosé, a little cloudy with the lees. The flavors are strawberry and raspberry with a kombucha-like funk from the end of fermentation in the bottle. Certified sustainable. ABV: 11.5 percent. PC: 675 grams (Sparkling).

Imported by Kobrand Wine & Spirits. Distributed locally by Republic National Distribution Company.

★ Good: The wine keeps its promises at a fair price. If it says chardonnay, it tastes like chardonnay.

★★ Excellent: A wine with added character and interest. Can lift your eyebrows from the first sip.

★★★ Extraordinary: An exciting wine that stands out from others in its category. It feels good to pump your fist and hit the table.

★★★★ Sublime: From another world. You may have thought, “So that’s what they were talking about.” »
