The Voice’s Blake Shelton admits he thought the show’s concept was ridiculous when he first signed up, but the coaching chemistry has changed their minds.
Coach Blake Shelton admitted that when The voice made his debut, he thought the concept of the show was ridiculous. The basic principle is similar to other shows like American Idol, But The voice is unique in that the coaches sit on large red chairs that turn when they want to choose an artist for their team. When The voice created, even the Blind Auditions concept was a new experience for regular viewers of singing and talent shows.
The successful competition series was launched in 2011 with original coaches Shelton, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green. In the years that followed, many celebrities came and went, but Shelton was the only coach to appear in each season. Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Nick Jonas are currently on the coaching panel for The voice season 20 alongside the country music singer. Jonas will be seated next season, with pop superstar Ariana Grande taking her seat for season 21.

In a new interview with Variety, Shelton admits to having come up with the concept for The voice to be “pretty ridiculous“first, comparing the chairs and the red buttons to Star Trek. Before filming began, he didn’t see how it could actually work as a TV show. But things quickly changed. He said, “If Christina Aguilera does it, I will. The fact that we didn’t take it so seriously when we first started out, that’s where all the jokes started. … I do not know that [the] the show has always been designed to be as funny as it gets.“
Based on these comments, the chemistry between the coaches and their inability to take the concept or themselves seriously are big reasons why The voice became the hit it is today. Even though music is at the heart of the show, coaches need to be able to get along and work together in a way that is obvious to viewers watching. Before The voice came, fans of American Idol knew that the chemistry of the judges was critical. If this was missing between the original Idol Judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, viewers would have noticed immediately. It is not something that can be bought. This camaraderie exists or not. Idol fans remember the infamous Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj fights in season 12 which resulted in bad publicity and low ratings.
The voice spends a lot of time focusing on the coaches and their jokes, but it’s all fun. There is a mutual respect between Shelton and his fellow coaches that allows them to laugh at each other and joke around. It was obvious a long time ago The voice season 1 between Shelton, Levine, Aguilera and Green, and it’s still evident to this day with the current coaching panel.
The voice Airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
