After the release of the front and central window management application last month, John Siracusa is back with another Mac application today. SwitchGlass for macOS brings a dedicated application switch with a variety of different customization options for macOS.
Siracusa announced the new SwitchGlass app on their blog tonight. It is described as a floating application selector that displays an icon for each of the applications that you run on your Mac. Siracusa describes some of the different things you can do here:
- Click on the icon of an application to bring all the windows of that application to the foreground.
- Hold down the Shift key while clicking on an application icon to bring up a single window of that application in the foreground.
- Right-click (or control-click) the icon of an application to activate a context menu from which you can show or hide an application.
- Drag one or more files to an application icon to open those files with the application.
- Hold down the Command key while clicking the application icon to display the application in the Finder.
SwitchGlass is also highly customizable, with support for changing the appearance of the application selector as well as functionality. For example, you can change the location of the application picker location, as well as its orientation and positioning. You can also adjust the settings for what happens when you click the application icons or click Shift.
Like Front and Center, Siracusa developed SwitchGlass to replace a feature offered by the DragThing app, which was discontinued when macOS Catalina dropped support for 32-bit applications. You may be wondering why you need SwitchGlass when macOS has the Dock built in. Syracuse explains:
SwitchGlass is for people who want an interface element entirely dedicated to switching applications, with a customizable appearance and location for each connected screen. When used with the Dock, SwitchGlass provides a second target for mouse-based application switching. With the hidden Dock, it provides an application switching interface without the bulk of the other Dock functions.
You can download SwitchGlass now from the Mac App Store for $ 4.99 and read more details on the Siracusa blog.
