Reason one – Price
You could never call the AirPods Pro 2 unreasonably priced — that $249 price tag is actually quite competitive, and they offer a lot for their money. That price has even come down a bit recently, with up to $20 off at a few retailers. Right now, though, in this Black Friday deal, the Sonys are an absolute steal. They’ve had a $100 cut on the price, making them $50 less than the latest AirPods Pro – and for our money, they’re definitely worth it.
Of course, not to be outdone, the AirPods Pro 2 have now received their own price drop – a $50 price cut that brings them down to $199. That’s a lot – but you’ll notice it’s no cheaper than the WF-1000XM4. For our money, the Sonys are still the best in terms of price.
Second reason – aesthetics
Apple’s AirPods lineup is somewhat ubiquitous at this point. These little white stalks are sticking out of people’s ears everywhere, and no one will ask or ask about your headphones if you have a pair stuck in your ears. They don’t look bad, by any stretch of the imagination, but they do look a bit boring now. Not a big deal – but one you might be interested in.
The Sonys, on the other hand, look crazy. It’s a strange pair of small stacked cylinders, which rest in your ear and a bit outside too. They’re unlike anything else, and that large surface area on the outside makes the touchpad easier to find – and a little less unpleasant to use.
Reason three – sound quality
The AirPods Pro 2 sound great – if a little neutral. This means that all high, mid and low frequencies are fairly well represented, without too much boost for any. This can make them a bit boring, as they lack a certain amount of bounce and jump, which makes that neutral sound signature feel a bit flat.
The Sonys don’t have this problem – there’s a definite bass boost that many will love, but more importantly they’re much more dynamic. Music has more energy and sounds a lot more fun than the AirPods Pro 2. Don’t get me wrong, both sound great – but the Sonys will have you smiling on the bus ride, while the AirPods Pro 2 will blend more in background.
