Real Madrid have announced that skipper Sergio Ramos will leave the club when his contract expires on June 30.
New Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti wanted to keep the legendary defender at the club, but the Spaniard wanted a new challenge after 16 years at the Bernabeu.
Alongside President Florentino Perez, Ramos will be honored at a tribute event on Thursday before addressing the media later.
A club statement read: “Real Madrid CF announces that tomorrow, Thursday 17 June, at 12:30 pm, there will be an institutional act of tribute and farewell to our captain Sergio Ramos, in the presence of our president Florentino Perez.”
Ramos only played two games in 2021 after undergoing successful knee surgery in January and was left on the bench for the last game of the season against Villarreal.
He was not included in Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for Euro 2020 due to a lack of form and fitness due to a series of insignificant injuries.
So where will Ramos end up next? In 2016, he admitted he was flattered to be the subject of Manchester United’s interest.
“There was an offer from United. I have considered changing for a while, but Real Madrid has always been my priority and there was no economic reason, ”he said in an interview with COPE.
“Did I feel cheated [by Madrid]? No, but I was disappointed for a while. There were problems that ended.
“Big club flattery is always good because it’s because you are doing well, but the fans and my club want me.”
