The new Rivian R2 gets a kitchen and a rooftop tent

Rivian delivered an unexpected double yesterday at the R2 unveiling where it surprised everyone with the even smaller R3. However, the first thing to do is to start deliveries of its long-awaited rival Tesla Model Y, but this will not happen until the first half of 2026. When it finally hits the streets, the R2 will be compatible with a series d clever accessories.

Much like the larger R1T pickup and R1S SUV, the latest entry in Rivian’s growing lineup caters to outdoor enthusiasts with a bunch of optional goodies. For example, the Travel Kitchen includes a water tank, a cooler, an induction cooktop with extra storage, and even cookware. Rivian will install hanging lights for when you’re cooking in the evening in the middle of nowhere.

Alternatively, the small kitchen can make room for a removable cargo box with handles on the sides and small wheels for transporting it. This is good for items that would otherwise make a mess inside the car, much like a small portable pickup truck bed. The interior is also ideal for storing things since you can not only fold the rear bench flat, but also the two front seats. Oh, and there’s also a front trunk.

What else? The rooftop cargo box is nothing fancy, but Rivian can swap it for a so-called treehouse. This is a square rooftop tent that comes with a ladder for easy access. Installed at the rear, the bike rack attaches to the R2 without tools and allows you to store two bikes. While some cars have umbrella holders built into the driver’s door, the electric SUV uses that space for a flashlight.

While it’s undoubtedly an interesting electric vehicle, the new Rivian R2 will unfortunately take its time to come to market. This is especially true in Europe (including the UK) where it won’t go on sale until 2027. In the US, prices will start at around $45,000, but you’ll pay more for these accessories. Logic tells us that the euro version will be more expensive taking into account value added tax (VAT).
