WITH another Super Bowl halftime show looming thanks to R&B legend Usher, eagle-eyed fans will keep their eyes peeled to see if he joins the ranks as one of the most shocking or outrageous.
Over the years, many prestigious names have graced the stage of America’s biggest weekend where football, sports, entertainment and music come together.
Names such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Coldplay, Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and 50 Cent graced the stage for a world-class performance and solidified themselves in pop culture history.
It hasn’t been without its share of controversies as well as shocking, funny and scandalous moments.
From Nipplegate in 2004 to a British star breaking broadcast rules, the Super Bowl has often made headlines, but for a variety of reasons.
The Sun takes a look at some of the biggest and most shocking situations in recent years.
Janet Jackson’s Nipplegate
At the height of her career, Janet was chosen to headline the 2004 show.
On the advice of those around her, she invited NSYNC star and pop music leader of the time, Justin Timberlake, for a special collaborative performance.
However, what happened during the concert was enough to end Janet’s career.
At the end of their performance, Justin was supposed to rip off the front of Janet’s costume.
Paving the way for a wardrobe malfunction, Justin appeared to pull a little too hard as he also ripped off the star’s bra, leaving her chest exposed to the nation during one of the most-watched television events of the year.
Janet’s nipple was covered with a barely visible shield.
However, despite only being exposed for a second, it appeared to damage Janet’s career, with many viewers reacting unfavorably to the incident.
British rapper flips the bird
British rapper MIA managed to make headlines in 2012 when she appeared for a tiny 10-second appearance alongside industry heavyweights Madonna and Nicki Minaj.
During a performance of the trio’s hit Give Me All Your Luvin’, MIA caused all kinds of controversy when she took a rather sweary stance at the end of her rap verse.
After discovering that she would lip-sync her words to her pre-recorded vocals and that they had been edited to remove the word “s***”, MIA opted to use a gesture to make her feelings known.
Unable to mime or rap the swear word live, she chose to stick her middle finger directly toward the camera lens.
While show executives attempted to temporarilythe screen to avoid the risk of falling below broadcast standards, they arrived too late and the screen briefly froze a few seconds after the gesture.
MIA was thought to have mimed the track to avoid any potential foul language, but that clearly didn’t stop the star.
The left shark steals the show
When Katy Perry took the stage for a fun pop extravaganza, no one would have imagined that a “dancing shark” would become the center of attention instead of the California Gurls singer.
With many dancers dressed on stage in very varied costumes, two identicalcould be seen dancing on either side of Katy.
However, all eyes were on Left Shark as it seemed they hadn’t come to watch rehearsals.
The cartoon-like character appeared to be struggling in the background and couldn’t match any of Katy’s or her right twin’s movements.
This sent the internet into meltdown, spawning countless memes and #LeftShark becoming the most tweeted moment of the entire Super Bowl.
Lady Gaga arrives
Before a performance featuring all of the pop icon’s biggest hits, Lady Gaga opted for a daredevil entrance passing from the stadium roof.
With an illusion making it look like she had jumped off the roof, Gaga could be seen floating in the air on two wires as she descended to a podium below.
In doing so, she appeared to imitate a crab as she kicked her arms and legs to get her down on stage.
However, the show became the biggest of his career, thanks to his huge catalog of number one hits.
