With the regular season fast approaching, teams are finalizing their rosters and ensuring all players are ready for Week 1. Between training camp, practices, tours and training camp , coaches assess their team’s form and what it needs to work on.

The Detroit Lions took a slightly different approach than most teams on Monday by holding an entirely player-led practice. Other than head coach Dan Campbell, no coach was on the field for practice. “Here are the team scenarios that we want to achieve,” left tackle Taylor Decker Campbell recalled, telling the team on Monday morning (via MLive), “and you’re going to go out there and run the show,”

“I think it’s great to do,” Decker continued, “because honestly, on a game day, we’re out there, we have to communicate, we have to be accountable to each other.”

The new way of training surprised some players, including Decker, who called the training unique. Decker said the practice was unlike any he had experienced before.

The Lions haven’t had success in, well, a while, so I guess trying a new way to prepare for the season can’t hurt. Last season, Detroit went 3-13-1 and landed in last place in the NFC North. The Lions haven’t made the playoffs since 2016 and haven’t won a postseason game since 1992.

Campbell took over as head coach in 2021 after spending time as an assistant coach and tight ends coach for the New Orleans Saints.
