The Game Awards 2022 will be the shortest show yet, says Geoff Keighley – IGN

The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley said this year’s awards were the shortest yet.

“Tonight is probably the shortest show we’ve done,” he said on Twitter. “It will still be 2.5 hours, but we’ve streamlined the runtime with more focused content, fewer larger sponsors, and big theatrical moments.”

What those theatrical moments will be, remains to be seen…but it looks like they pack a lot into the show’s reduced runtime.

“A shorter runtime means less potential to attract viewers,” he added. “We don’t expect massive growth in live streams, but we believe this is the right move for the industry and the franchise leading up to our 10th show next year.”

The Game Awards return tonight with a live audience for the first time in three years. The nominations include some of the biggest games of the year, and you can expect plenty of highlights, such as game reveals, musical numbers, and well… the awards themselves.

“Revelations are spaced out throughout the series, so hopefully the pacing will feel right,” Keighley explained. “There are a lot of funny moments. We’ve also picked up surprise presenters, artists, and plenty of games that aren’t announced in advance.

As for the revelations themselves, this looks like a bumper year:

“There are games revealing tonight that I’ve been waiting to show you for years,” he added. “We don’t make the games, so we’re only as good as what’s shipped and what’s ready to show. I feel really good with this year’s lineup.

The Game Awards is streaming free for everyone tonight, December 8 at 4:00 p.m. PT / 7:00 p.m. ET from the IGN pre-show. The ceremony will begin at 5:00 p.m. PT / 8:00 p.m. ET once the pre-show is over.

“You will have an opinion on the split between awards/reveals, ads, winners – we fully expect that and accept that. I hope you leave feeling good and proud to be part of this community. The work done this year and the future of the medium is incredibly exciting.
