The cast of ‘On My Block’ spinoff ‘Freeridge’ promised the new show would bring all the twists, mystery, romance and life lessons that fans of the original loved, and of the series. – which hit Netflix on February 1. 2 – definitely delivers.
The first season of “Freeridge” follows a new core of four high school friends – Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cameron), Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi) and Bryana Salaz (Inez) – as they navigate friendship , love, class conflict, heartbreak, and – believe it or not – a curse that wreaks havoc on their lives.
With appearances from familiar “On My Block” characters sprinkled throughout the fast-paced season – like Ruby’s parents, Geny (Paula Garces) and Ruben (Eric Neil Gutierrez), as neighbors to Gina and Inez; Jamal (Brett Gray) calling with information about Roller World; and an Abuelita lookalike (played by Peggy Blow in the mysterious new role) — “Freeridge” packs a punch for fans old and new alike.
The question now is, will there be a season two?
How does “Freeridge” season 1 end?
After spending an entire season believing the ghost of Abuelita, aka Marisol, cursed, the four principals discover that the doppelganger they saw is actually Abuelita’s long-lost sister, Mariluna, who disowned her family for her wealthy lover, Henry Fordman. She missed her family later in life, realizing that although she seemed to have everything, she really had nothing; it was Marisol who had everything with her family.
After Gloria helps Mariluna reconnect with her family by inviting them to a Thanksgiving dinner at her mansion, Mariluna offers to write her and her crew a check for $1 million on the spot or, if they can spend the money in three months “without showing anything for it”, they would earn $10 million. Mariluna leaves to let the team think, and they decide to play for $10 million.
But tragedy strikes when Mariluna goes out to get balloons from her car. Two members of the Santos gang see her and, believing her to be Marisol, demand that she tell them where the Roller World money is that Marisol and Jamal found before her death. Inside the mansion, the teenagers hear a gunshot ring out. The final shot of the season shows Mariluna’s legs dangling limply in front of her car door, seemingly dejected for not handing over the Roller World money she never got.
Will there be a season 2 of “Freeridge”?
While a second season of “Freeridge” has yet to be officially announced, the first season’s cliffhanger ending suggests the writers have more stories to tell. Now, is Mariluna really dead? “She better be alive,” Mejia told POPSUGAR when asked if there was a chance Mariluna would survive to see season two. “[We’re] trying to cash that check,” adds Salaz. “For that $10 million she promised. I don’t know how they’re going to handle it, but they’re going to get through this,” Mejia said.
If Mariluna is dead, however, and she can’t write to the crew verifying $10 million, they’ll have to find new ways to raise big bucks to deal with their individual hardships. Chances are this will lead them to search for the Roller World money that Marisol has been hiding.
If so, the cast tells POPSUGAR they have ideas for which “On My Block” characters would be best suited to return to Freeridge and help them in their search.
“It would have to be Jamal,” Wilson said, Mejia, Salaz and Trainor agreeing in unison. “There’s a lot going on here, he could do that.” But Trainor realizes there’s another Freeridge High alumni whose help would be needed: “Besides Jamal, I’m going to pick Jasmin.”
Could Jamal and Jasmin come back to help our new hard core find the Roller World money? We’ll find out if/when Netflix renews “Freeridge” for another season. At the very least, we know that Mejia, Salaz, Wilson and Trainor are excited about the prospect of more “Freeridge”, which is a good sign!
“Freeridge” is now streaming on Netflix.
