The first trailer for Netflix’s Ayrton Senna series is stunning

Netflix will soon release a new miniseries based on the life of FAyrton Senna. Simply called Senna, it is a six-episode series that is expected to air later this year. Netflix has not announced an exact release date except later in 2024.

The just-released trailer shows a glimpse into the Formula 1 driver’s life story, compared to his emotional victory in 1991 at the Brazilian Grand Prix. At that time, Senna had two F1 world championships under his belt, but the Brazil native never won at his home track. With visions of his youth and career on the helmet visor, the trailer takes us through the difficulties he faced during this race. It ends with his screams of victory, captured on the live broadcast of the race as he crossed the checkered flag. Even the most die-hard fans might tear up a bit.

Senna is played by Gabriel Leone in the series, which also stars Matt Mella as Alain Prost and Pamela Tome as Xuxa, Senna’s girlfriend. According to Netflix, the series is a fictional account of his life story, both behind the wheel and on a personal level. It starts at the start of his Formula Ford racing career and takes us all the way to the end.

Of course, the end came on May 1, 1994, almost 30 years ago to the day this trailer was released. His car left the track on a high-speed corner at Imola during the San Marino Grand Prix, hitting the wall at a speed well over 100 mph. He was extracted and immediately airlifted to hospital, but his time of death was ultimately recorded as the moment of impact in the race.

After his heartfelt victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1991, Senna would go on to win his third world championship that year. At 31, he was the youngest triple winner in F1 and the youngest to win two consecutive championships (1990 and 1991). He was 34 years old when he died.
