Along with iOS 15.6 and macOS 12.5 Monterey, Apple released watchOS 8.7 with bug fixes, performance improvements, and security updates.
Since the Apple Watch Series 3 is not compatible with watchOS 9 this fall, this is most likely the last update it will receive. Unlike iOS and macOS, Apple does not release watchOS updates for older devices. The Apple Watch Series 3 was the last model with Apple’s old design, with a 38mm or 40mm square screen and few sensors. Apple still sells it, although it will almost certainly be phased out or replaced in the fall.
watchOS 8.7: security updates
The update won’t change much to the Apple Watch, but it does include over two dozen security updates affecting every corner of the operating system, from audio to the neural engine to the Wi-Fi. All updates also appear as part of iOS 15.6 and iPadOS 15.6 updates, including several critical updates that may lead to the execution of arbitrary code.
How to get watchOS 8.7
To install watchOS 8.7, go to the Apple Watch app on iPhone. In the My watch tab, select General then Software update and Download and install. Your Apple Watch will need to be at least 50% charged, placed on a charger, and within range of your iPhone.
