According to recent reports, the Newcastle United scouting team are following Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.
That’s according to a recent report from The Athletic, which claims Eddie Howe, as well as the club’s chief recruiting officer, Steve Nickson, are big fans of the 24-year-old Mexico international and are considering a January move.
However, should the Geordies attempt to lure the talented defensive midfielder to St James’ Park, they would face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

It’s unclear exactly how much Ajax value the versatile South American, but considering the Eredivisie side have just had most of their first team poached, including Lisandro Martinez and Antony, who have both joined Manchester United, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Dutch champions fighting to keep Alvarez.
