The Mitsubishi Outlander received a major redesign for the fourth generation of the SUV. The entire model range has undergone a redesign, including the plug-in hybrid variant. Mitsubishi will begin sales of the Outlander PHEV in select US markets in November, and it will cost $39,845 when it arrives, excluding destination charges which depend on location.
Cars bound for Hawaii and Alaska will receive a destination charge of $1,470, while cars bound for the continental United States are a bit cheaper with a charge of $1,345. That brings the starting price of the Outlander PHEV to $41,315 and $41,190, respectively.

The Outlander PHEV debuted with an all-electric range of 54 miles (87 kilometers), Mitsubishi hit that figure on the lenient European test cycle. The SUV will return to 38 mi (61 km) of range in the United States. The automaker claims the SUV can deliver up to 674 km (420 mi) of driving distance on a single tank of fuel and a single charge.
The Outlander PHEV has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder Atkinson cycle gasoline engine and two electric motors. Combined output is 248 horsepower (184 kilowatts) and 332 pound-feet (450 Newton-meters) of torque. The previous Outlander PHEV developed 221 hp (165 kW). The new SUV has a 350-volt, 20-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, with a 40% improvement in range over the previous model. DC fast charging can charge the SUV to 80% in about 38 minutes.
The SUV also arrives with a larger 14.8 gallon fuel tank and Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control system. The engine and an electric motor power the front wheels while a single electric motor spins the rear wheels. The Outlander PHEV will also have Mitsubishi’s Active Yaw Control.
The entry-level non-PHEV 2022 Outlander starts at $26,995 (excluding destination charges). While the hybrid is significantly more expensive, Mitsubishi says customers have been reserving the model at dealerships for months. “We can’t wait to start delivering on that excitement,” said Mark Chaffin, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, who called the model a “pinnacle” of the automaker’s engineering.
The Outlander PHEV carries the same styling as the non-rechargeable model, which is found inside. The model’s sleek cabin is the same as the other variants except for the hybrid-specific display readouts. Sales of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will begin nationwide after it goes on sale in select markets in November.
