The BMW M2 won’t make its debut until October, but BMW can’t wait for people to drive it. We tried it last month, and others too. A new YouTube video by Daniel Abt shows the high-performance coupe hurtling down the German autobahn at a blistering 181 miles per hour (292 kilometers per hour).
The two-door is powered by BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The powertrain produces 473 horsepower (347 kilowatts) in the M3 and M4, but it won’t do as much in the M2. BMW will limit the car’s output to around 450 hp (335 kW), which is an improvement over the M2 CS, which delivers 444 hp (326 kW).

BMW may be eager for people to drive it, but it’s not as eager to divulge all the performance details, like how long it takes to hit 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour). However, the video shows the M2 easily hitting 181 mph on the highway.
BMW will route the car’s power through a standard six-speed manual gearbox. The automaker’s eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission will also be available. The M2 will also attack the M4 for its active brakes and shock absorbers.
The M2 will be wider than any other 2-Series variant thanks to its bulging fenders, and it should look a lot more aggressive than the M240i sitting in the stables. BMW uses carbon fiber throughout the vehicle for the seats and shift paddles. BMW also uses the material for the roof, which helps reduce the car’s weight and lower its center of gravity.
BMW continues to hide the coupe under a camouflage wrap, so we still have something to learn about the new model. The new M2 is a milestone for the automaker, as the model will be the brand’s latest ICE-only M model. BMW M will switch to producing hybrid and electric vehicles like the rest of the industry.
There are still three months until the big reveal, but we don’t know how much more BMW will have to share. The new M2 goes on sale next April, and we’re curious to see hotter variants coming later. We hope.
