Next-generation autonomous vehicles must successfully navigate environments with challenging lighting conditions, and current perception-based tracking algorithms often fall short. TII is therefore exploring the use of radiometric sensors, which can provide infrared rather than photometric frames for tracking objects in low light conditions.
“Autonomous vehicles are the future,” said Dr. Najwa Aaraj, Principal Investigator, Cryptography Research Center, and Principal Investigator, Autonomous Robotics Research Center, at the Technology Innovation Institute. “While self-driving technology still has some way to go to achieve operational and technical flawlessness, this challenge will help innovators find solutions to ensure that self-driving vehicles on our roads operate as safely as possible. Advancements like these will launch us into a bold new phase of our autonomous transportation journey, and we can’t wait to see what the crowds come up with.”
“You can always count on our network of innovators to push the boundaries and propel us in exciting new directions,” said Kal K. Sahota, CEO, HeroX. “Improving self-driving vehicles is no exception: tapping into the HeroX crowd is a strategic and effective way to find innovations that will usher us into an exciting new era for self-driving vehicles.”
The challenge: The TII Infrared Tracking Challenge is open to innovators, start-ups, research institutes and university students worldwide. Challengers are encouraged to take advantage of publicly available datasets with content similar to the example dataset provided by TII and to use thermal domain color matching techniques where necessary. Submissions will be evaluated against criteria defined by TII.
The price: Three winners will receive prizes totaling $75,000 through May 17, 2023. First place winner will be rewarded $40,000; second place, $20,000; and third place, $15,000.
Eligibility to Compete and Win Prizes: The prize is open to anyone aged 18 or over participating as an individual or as a team. Individual competitors and teams may come from any country, if United States Federal sanctions do not prohibit participation (some restrictions apply).
