Last night Harry Styles won album of the year at the Grammys for Harry‘the House, a surprise victory in a category where Beyoncé, Adele, Kendrick Lamar and many others have been nominated. The internet was shocked, and some members of the Grammys audience themselves made their displeasure known that Styles beat Beyoncé.
Styles gave her acceptance speech while being heckled by some fans who shouted “Beyoncé” and “Beyoncé should have won.” On TikTok, images of this are going viral, along with his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift’s reaction. Swift stood throughout Styles’ speech, watching him intently. She seemed to lower her eyes when she heard the ruckus. BuzzFeed noted that some fans felt the moment may have reminded him of when Kanye West infamously interrupted his 2009 VMAs speech to say Beyoncé should have won.
Swift was particularly supportive of Styles on Grammy night. Not only did she give him standing ovations during his performance and acceptance speeches, but she even snuck up to his table at one point during the show to talk to him. The Hollywood ReporterChris Gardner reported that she had a “long talk” with him and hugged him. She was also photographed putting her hand on her back by the evening’s photographers.
While Beyoncé made history at the Grammys last night as the most decorated artist at the ceremony, she never won album of the year. She doesn’t win for Lemonade Or Renaissance were the two major shake-ups for fans, in particular. Adele, who won in 2017 over Beyoncé for her album 25even refused to accept the award on stage because she thought Beyoncé should have won.
“I can’t accept this award, and I’m very humbled and very grateful and gracious, but my life is Beyoncé, and the album for me, the Lemonade album, Beyoncé, was so monumental and so well thought out,” Adele said during her acceptance speech. “And so beautiful and naked and we all got to see another side of you that you don’t always let us see, and we appreciate that. And all of us artists adore you. You are our light. And the way you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering, and you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you. I always have. And I always will. I’m grateful for that. .”
Styles acknowledged that his Album of the Year win came as a surprise to him behind the scenes, because those awards are never predictable. When asked if he personally expected a victory for Beyoncé from reporters, he said“You never know with this stuff. I don’t think you can look at any of the nominees and not feel like they deserve it. When I look at this category, it’s all the people who inspired me at different times, so it’s not like – you know, you’d understand anybody winning. And yeah, I’m really grateful that they chose us.
