Damon Albarn is scheduled to perform tonight at Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Before the single show, the leader of Blur/Gorillaz gave an interview to the Los Angeles Times. In it, he praised Billie Eilish, saying he thinks she’s “exceptional.” However, he didn’t think the same of Taylor Swift. Albarn said that “she doesn’t write her own songs.” And that “co-writing is very different”.
Swift caught wind of Albarn’s comments and responded on Twitter, saying, “@DamonAlbarn I was such a huge fan of you until I saw this,” Swift said. “I write ALL my own songs. Your hot take is completely wrong and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really shitty trying to discredit my songwriting. WOW.”
Swift went on to say “PS I wrote this tweet by myself in case you were wondering.”
Swift appeared in the original article when the interviewer suggested that Swift was an example of a great songwriter, and Albarn disagreed: “That doesn’t count,” Albarn said. “I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different from writing…I’m not hating anyone, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes. That’s not to say the result can’t be really awesome.
Albarn continued: “And some of the greatest singers – I mean, Ella Fitzgerald never wrote a song in her life. When I sing, I have to close my eyes and be there. I guess I’m a traditionalist in that sense. A really interesting songwriter is Billie Eilish and her brother. I’m more drawn to that than Taylor Swift. It’s just darker – less endlessly optimistic. Much more minor and weird. I think she’s exceptional.
