On October 21, countless fans stayed up late into the night to be among the first to listen to Taylor Swift’s new album, “Midnights.” A few days after the release of the new album, Swift announced her upcoming tour which would include songs from all eras of her music. Fans were over the moon as they tried to get tickets. People waited hours for Ticketmaster to go down, which prevented many real Swifties from getting tickets.

First up, lifelong fan Gabbie Crone (’24) said her favorite song from “Midnights: Lavender Edition” is “Hits Different”. She said, “That one almost looks like a 1989 type of song. She also liked “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” which featured in “Midnights (3am Edition)”. But, his favorite song from the album is “You’re on Your Own Kid”. Explaining: “It definitely speaks to me more… being an eldest daughter, having a lot of expectations of you, especially because neither of my parents went to college. So I have to lead by example. »
I also asked him about the sound of the album as a whole. She said, “I like that it changes. I like that it’s not consistent in terms of sound because I feel like I’m able to gravitate to different songs and enjoy the experience, as opposed to something like Still where everything is very soft-pop/soft-indie.
I also spoke with Mallory Jackson (’23) about her experience with the album. Overall, she felt a lot of emotions towards the album: “Some songs made me sad, while others were more sweet and happy. I can relate to a lot of things that Taylor talks about in my own life. Jackson’s favorite song on the album was “You’re on Your Own Kid” because of the “big bridge”.
What’s new with Ticketmaster?
An impatient Jackson waited several hours for no tickets. She commented on her experience saying, “[I feel] very frustrated. I waited 7 hours on Monday and several hours on Tuesday, for tickets to sell out both times as I was having trouble and couldn’t check out with my tickets.
On the other hand, Crone accepted his fate and didn’t even bother to take care of the site. After the presale, many people got more tickets than they needed and decided to resell them for way more than they were worth. Concert tickets for the Eras Tour are now selling for up to $20,000 at some locations due to rising prices.
After the whole debacle with Ticketmaster, Swift issued an apology to her fans. Reactions to this apology have been mixed as many people have not forgiven Swift.
Crone commented on the size of the concert hall in Chicago and how all three days are already sold out. She does not understand how this could not have been better anticipated on the part of Ticketmaster. “You can’t say it wasn’t the most anticipated tour of the decade so far. So I appreciate that she apologized because I think it looks like she’s doing it herself or finding a way to buy tickets on her own site. But, Ticketmaster was like, ‘Oh no, we got it, we got it all under control,’ then fumbled the bag.
The whole situation with Swift and Ticketmaster was a disaster and hopefully it will never happen again. It just shows how the decisions artists make can have both positive and negative impacts on their fans and it also shows how corrupt monopolies like Ticketmaster can be.
