Supermarket driver Dean wins life-changing £170,000

Joe Dean, world number 2,930 and part-time delivery driver, has won a “life-changing” £170,000 prize by finishing second at the Kenya Open.

The Englishman, who advanced to the DP World Tour through qualifying, finished second behind Darius van Driel in Nairobi.

Dean, who works as a delivery driver for Morrisons supermarket, shot a final score of four-under-par 67 to finish 12 under.

“It must be [life changing]. This is what people dream of,” Dean said.

The 29-year-old from Sheffield qualified for the DP World Tour in 2023, but did not compete until the Qatar Masters in February because he could not afford the round-the-world trip to take part .

He missed the cut in Doha and returned to his delivery job for Morrisons, which he was doing as recently as last week.

But, after finishing two shots behind eventual winner Van Driel after the first round, Dean matched the Dutchman over the next three rounds to finish two shots alongside Spaniard Nacho Elvira.

“After the last three or four years, I never thought I’d get another chance,” Dean said.

“Still have a few gremlins to overcome to reach my full potential, but like everyone else, you have to overcome them, crush them and move on.

“I’ve never been one of the most confident people. Coming in this week was a little intimidating. Second event, you don’t really feel like you belong and you feel like you’re trying to prove something.

“Luckily, I was able to recover quickly and figure out how to move around the golf course.”
