I recently had a long chat with the president of Seven Bucks Productions, Hiram garcia, and the problem with Seven Bucks is that they just have too many exciting projects going on. Our conversation spanned many projects as we talked at length about the experience of bringing Jungle cruise to life and how everything just packed Black adam is about to shake up the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe. But there is a lot more where it comes from.
In an effort to best highlight the exciting updates Garcia has provided, I’ll be handing out the rest of the conversation in pieces over the next few days. And today I’m happy to share what Garcia told me about the highly anticipated DC animated film. DC’s League of Super Animals and the star-studded Netflix movie Red Notice, as well as a line of Dwayne johnsonMarvel’s relationship with the president of Marvel Studios Kevin feige.
In May 2021, it was announced that Seven Bucks would be producing an animated film. Super Animals movie with Johnson voicing Krypto the Superdog alongside Kevin hart like Ace the Bat-Hound – aka Batman’s Hound. Jared stern, whose writing credits range from The internship To The LEGO Batman Movie, writes and directs the film, which is of course distributed by Warner Bros.
As for Red Notice, the original Netflix movie was referred to by the filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, who Seven Bucks teamed up with on Skyscraper, and finds Johnson playing an Interpol agent forced to team up with the world’s greatest art thief (Gal gadot) and the biggest crook in the world (Ryan reynolds). The film was in production when the pandemic hit and was forced to shut down for months. Garcia told me about the challenges of stopping and starting production, and how Red Notice marks the biggest movie Netflix has ever made to date.
And finally, as this part of the conversation followed a long discussion about Black adam, I asked Garcia if Johnson had ever been offered a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And although he has confirmed that nothing bad has ever happened, Johnson and Feige have a great relationship and mutual admiration for each other, while adding that Black adam has been a passionate project for them for years.
You can check out that part of the conversation below and learn more in the coming days.
DC League of Super-Pets seems so fun. What can you tease about it?
GARCIA: It’s a lot of fun. As a Superman fan and avid dog lover, being able to tell the story of Krypto and Superman is a dream come true! It’s such a lovely story and on top of that we introduce the League of Super-Pets and all these wonderful characters. We have such an amazing cast of actors, and every time you can get Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart together to do what they’re doing, you know it’s going to be a great, fun ride for the audience. It’s such a huge project that we’ve been working on for quite some time, so we were thrilled when we finally made the announcement. [Seven Bucks co-founder and co-owner] Dany [Garcia], Dwayne and I have always been huge DC fans at heart, so being able to play in this space and tell these stories, based on these beloved characters, is truly an honor. I think the fans are going to be very happy with what we have come up with. It should be released next year in May.
I know Dwayne is one of the most requested actors working today. Black adam took a while to finally turn on the cameras. In the meantime, have you ever been contacted by Marvel regarding possibilities with him to work there?
GARCIA: DJ and Kévin [Feige] have a great relationship and we’ve flirted with a few ideas already, but nothing serious. There is a mutual admiration for what we’ve all done and what Kevin has built there is truly amazing. At the end of the day, for us, we’ve always been very committed to what we wanted to build with Black adam. Black Adam was the character we wanted to bring to life and thought DJ was meant to play. Once we set our sights on this character over a decade ago, it was hard to imagine DJ feeling sorry for anyone else.
Another one that you have in the box is Red Notice, which I’m super excited about. What can you tease about that one?
GARCIA: Red Notice is such a fun movie! It’s the greatest movie Netflix has ever made and they were amazing partners making sure we had everything we needed to complete the movie in the middle of a pandemic. Despite all these challenges, we are so happy with the way Red Notice proved. These three actors are so amazing together. Gal (Gadot), Ryan (Reynolds) and DJ have amazing chemistry and look great together. You can’t have enough. Plus, the movie has a fun throwback vibe, with DJ being an FBI profiler hunting down the world’s most wanted art thieves. It’s definitely a great globetrotting adventure and the kind of movie that offers a fun escape that I think the world could use more of right now. We are very proud of the film and can’t wait to see it released on November 12th worldwide. Essentially, you see Black Adam, Deadpool, and Wonder Woman in an alternate onscreen version. Who doesn’t want to see this?
