Recently, engineers and researchers from AV-TEST The organization has tested several antivirus and malware protection suites for MacOS to determine which security systems are the best for absolute protection, performance, and usability. The products they tested to verify each of these three categories were awarded a maximum of 6 points per category. This means that the best security product scored 18 points in total.
The five security solutions tested included Avast Security, Avira Antivirus Pro, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, NortonLifeLock Norton 360, and Trend Micro Antivirus.
Out of these five products, Avira, Trend Micro and NortonLifeLock were found to be the best performers with 6 points in each test and obtaining 18 points as the final score.
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac obtained 5.5 points for the protection category and 17.5 points for the final score. Avast Security’s total score was 16.5 points due to its lower points in the protection and performance test.
This research was necessary because times have changed, and although MacOS was once considered one of the most secure operating systems, the AV-TEST organization discovered through previous testing that the number of attacks from Malware on Mac computers has increased on all of these systems. years.
From 2008 to 2014, the number of viruses, Trojans and other attacks was very low for the Mac operating system. During this period, the AV-TEST database had only 7,300 Mac malware samples. That number has grown exponentially and in two years, in 2016, the database had over 40,000 Mac malware samples. That number doubled again in 2018, and in 2020, more than 240,000 Mac OS malware attackers surfaced. This means that with the evolution of operating systems and their performance, attackers have evolved as well, and they have taken their game to the next level now, with their attacks directed at the Mac OS. In the past, Windows was considered the most vulnerable operating system. Unfortunately, this is no longer true. While Windows has improved its security systems over time, attackers have also found new ways to not only attack the Windows operating system, but also change their focus on Mac OS.
So, given all these facts, the AV-TEST organization believes that operating systems need to be more defensive and that security products need to be more up to par in terms of the protection they offer, of their performance. and their user-friendliness. And it is also important that the users also take care of the security of their system. Users should avoid downloading data from insecure sources and should avoid visiting suspicious sites.
