Maybe tired of their song and dance show, Steve Martin and Martin Short pick up Selena Gomez and head over for New York City‘s Upper West Side. “From the comedic spirit of Steve Martin,” Only the murders in the building, a new detective and crime comedy series for Hulu, lives to his New York poster, with a typeface that matches the magazine and a handful of round Fran Lebowitz glasses. Again, like an issue of the New Yorker, the show looks attractive.
Here’s the synopsis:
From the minds of Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman comes a murder mystery comedy series for the ages. “Only Murders In The Building” follows three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with real crime and suddenly find themselves enveloped in one. When a grisly death occurs at their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspect murder and use their precise knowledge of the real crime to investigate the truth. As they record their own podcast to document the case, the three uncover the building’s intricate secrets that stretch back years. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell each other. Soon, the endangered trio realize that a killer could be living among them as they rush to decipher the clues that accumulate before it’s too late.
You know what, of course. Maybe we are get sweet in our old age, but it’s nice to see Steve Martin and Martin Short again in this mode, mixing it into some high-profile wide-ranging comedy with a third wildcard. In this case, they eventually went ahead and replaced Chevy Chase with Selena Gomez—something that fans have claimed. Still, it’s hard not to be charmed by these having fun, even if it only elicits a few laughs and a call from your parents to say how cool the show is. Sounds nice, mom.
Only the murders in the building debuts on Hulu on August 31.
