Stellantis is paying some employees to voluntarily quit during the switch to electric vehicles

Stellantis reportedly offered buyouts to some of its employees in the United States, CNBC reports. The corporate move came in preparation for the company’s foray into the electric vehicle era, downsizing and realigning its workforce in the process.

The parent company of Jeep, Chrysler, Ram and Dodge currently has 13,000 salaried jobs in the United States, but not all have been offered to leave voluntarily.

According to the report, employees aged at least 55, with the company for 10 years or with 30 years of service, and benefiting from a pension are eligible for buy-back. They were notified recently and have until December 5 to decide on the offer.

A Stellantis spokesperson confirmed the move to CNBC but did not reveal how many employees received the offer.

“As part of our transformation to become a sustainable technology mobility company and market leader in low-emission vehicles, in October we offered select US employees the option to voluntarily part ways with the company with a set of favorable benefits that otherwise would not be available to them,” the spokesperson told CBNC in an emailed statement.

Dodge and Jeep are deepening electrification as part of Stellantis’ updated product roadmap revealed in February this year. Even truck maker Ram is set to electrify its products by unveiling the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV concept on January 5, 2022.

The corporate move reported by Stellantis is similar to what Ford announced in August, cutting 3,000 jobs in the United States, Canada and India. About 2,000 workers have been affected, while the remaining 1,000 are agency positions as part of Ford’s restructuring plan to make the Blue Oval more competitive in the automotive market.

Meanwhile, General Motors did not offer a similar package to its salaried employees this year, although the company has done so for the past few years.
