Why the Steelers can cover

There are a lot of fierce battles for position, and that includes quarterback. Mitchell Trubisky is expected to start, but rookie Kenny Pickett intends to push Mason Rudolph for the backup position. Pitt’s first-round pick was the 2021 ACC Player of the Year. He led the Panthers to an 11-2 mark and threw for 4,319 yards, 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Fourth stringer Chris Oladokun could also have a say in the competition. The seventh-round pick threw more than 3,000 and 25 touchdowns for South Dakota State last season and attracted interest from other teams before the Steelers selected him. Second-round pick George Pickens of Georgia and fourth-round pick Calvin Austin of Memphis are among the many talented receivers trying to get attention. Anthony Miller is also in that receiver mix, and the former second-rounder had a solid relationship with Trubisky when the two were with the Bears.

Why the Seahawks can cover

Quarterback competition will have an impact, with Geno Smith set to start for Seattle. Lock will push for the top job, while Colts 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason is a solid No. 3. Lock cut back on errors that plagued him in Denver and threw for 185 yards , to Smith’s 94, in a mock game last weekend. Smith started three games for Seattle last season and went 1-2, including a 23-20 OT loss to the Steelers. The 31-year-old, a 2003 Jets second-round pick, completed 15 of 25 passes for 136 yards in the preseason last year.

Lock threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns in Denver’s opener against the Vikings last season. Eason played in all three preseason games for the Colts, completing 41 of 62 throws for 389 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. The running backs battle will also be watched closely, with second-round pick Kenneth Walker and DeeJay Dallas trying to upset presumptive starter Rashaad Penny. Walker won the Doak Walker Award last season after rushing for 1,636 yards and scoring 18 touchdowns for Michigan State. Dallas was Miami’s fourth-round pick in 2020.
