England manager Gareth Southgate has been urged to make the most of the incredible attacking players available to him at Euro 2020 … by playing them all on one squad!
Charlie Austin is excited about the Three Lions’ chances in the delayed tournament, insisting they have the potential to be one of the most exciting teams to watch.
And he told the boss not to waste the talent he has to choose, saying he should aim to entertain this summer and give fans a reason to come back behind England.
There has been a lot of debate over who should be picked for the England team for the Euro, with players like Leicester’s Harvey Barnes and Leeds striker Patrick Bamford reportedly in the running thanks to their brilliant seasons in Premier League.
There are also many more seasoned talent to choose from, although Southgate has come under criticism for its more conservative lineups over the years.
Darren Bent said at Tuesday’s sporting breakfast that England have one of the best talent pools to choose from in all of Europe, but still believes it will be a tough tournament for the Three Lions with doubts that Southgate will go with a total. offensive side.
“In terms of attacking England have some incredible players, probably the most in numbers for quite some time, but Southgate has to find a way to fit them all in,” said the former England international.
“It’s nice to have all these offensive players playing great for their clubs, but is he ready to put in most of it?” I don’t think he will.
“But they are not the only ones, France has a great talent that passes; they have Kylian Mbappe who is one of the best in the world and they won the World Cup!
“There is Spain who crushed Germany, Belgium, Portugal and Italy are getting back to their best – it’s going to be tough for England.”
But Austin wants Southgate to throw their previous plans out the window and instead look to entertain this summer, saying England should purely ‘aim to score more than their opponents’ at Euro 2020.
And he revealed the team he would choose to help lead the nation to glory.
“Here’s what I would do,” the QPR forward said on Drivetime.
“Pickford in goal, Kyle Walker right-back, John Stones and Harry Maguire center-back and left-back, I would choose Ben Chilwell.
“Declan Rice as a midfielder, then I would play Foden, Maddison and Grealish three-way, with Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane up front.
“You can’t have that many attacking players and not bring them onto the pitch. It’s an exciting time as an England supporter, isn’t it?
“We have so many attacking players, so we have to get them out – we’ve been there!
“I don’t have a back-five, we have the offensive players, so score more than the other team and be exciting to watch, give the fans a reason to come back behind them.
“That’s what I think anyway…”
