Two weeks into the high school basketball season, the only thing stopping the St. Augustine boys from starting undefeated is a four-point loss to Sierra Canyon, a team ranked No. 5 in the nation and No. 1 in California by MaxPreps.
St. Augustine compiled a 6-1 record and remains ranked No. 1 – where it started – in the first Union-Tribune Sportswriters / Sportscasters poll of the young season.
Torrey Pines (6-0) jumped over San Marcos (4-1) to take second place and the Knights third.
Cathedral Catholic (5-1), unranked in the preseason, moved up to fourth. The Dons’ only loss is 56-44 to Torrey Pines.
Mission Bay (5-2) retained their pre-season spot, staying at No.5.
