Although 2020 has been the peak year for home fitness classes and gyms and fitness studios have long reopened, two international companies are trying to keep Australians at home.
Italian fitness company Technogym officially launched in Australia this month with its smart indoor exercise bike, and famous American brand Peloton announced that it is bringing its stationary bikes here, too, in the second half of 2021.
Their expansion follows an increase in the popularity of high-tech home workouts – especially for Peloton – even before Covid-19. However, the pandemic has undoubtedly helped the industry continue to thrive.
So, with the two tech bikes available in Australia by the end of 2021, what are the benefits of getting one?
Technogym’s main point of difference is its integrated entertainment system – via a 56-centimeter tablet console. It contains Netflix, Youtube, TV channels, social media apps, news and games. You can also use it to access a range of live and archived cycling lessons, as well as individual workouts and off-bike bodyweight workouts.
At $ 4,590 for the Technogym bike, it’s not what you call affordable. However, once you shell out for the bike, the monthly subscription is only $ 39 for live and on-demand lessons.
Peloton has grown in popularity since its New York debut in 2014. Last month, the company announced that it was launching its bike – and a newer model, the Peloton Bike + – in Australia later this year.
The New York-based fitness tech company has celebs like Lizzo, Miley Cyrus, Hugh Jackman, Alicia Keys and Venus Williams as fans. Beyoncé has been using it for years – and she even curated a course playlist for the service.
As with Technogym, Peloton’s center console can be used to access thousands of workouts, as well as playlists and real-time coach motivation. Workouts cover a range of disciplines, from indoor cycling and running (on a treadmill or outdoors) to strength training and yoga.
The Peloton + bike and bike cost $ 2,895 and $ 3,695, respectively, with an all-access monthly subscription at $ 59 per month. The company is also planning to open Peloton showrooms in Sydney and Melbourne so you can try before you buy.
