Space Jam: a new legacy recently released in theaters and on HBO Max. Although he was panned by the critics, it seems the general public liked it. For all the flaws in the film, Space Jam: a new legacy did quite well at the box office, knocking down Marvel’s Black Widow.
Naturally, this prompted the question of whether Warner Bros. will or will not give the green light to a third part of the franchise. And if they do, who will play it?
Speaking to EW, A new legacy Director Malcom D. Lee hasn’t ruled out a third film, acknowledging that it would depend on audience response, a screenplay and story, and even a potential new star.
“I never say never,” Lee told EW when asked about the idea of a follow-up. “It will all depend on the positive response from fans to that. But I think the bar has been set so high when it comes to the first one with this iconic Michael Jordan world superstar, and now the same iconic LeBron James world superstar, who transcends sports. Who is the next person to put in this universe? And then you have to find a script and a story that is good enough not to repeat what has been done, but that will grab the spirit of it and keep it going. .
As for who Lee would like to play in the film, the director said: “Dwayne Johnson would be an interesting choice.”
“It would be different. I don’t know exactly what his skills would be, maybe he will go back to wrestling. It could be interesting.” Lee added.
Prior to becoming a Hollywood star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was commonly referred to as “The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment”. This, of course, was during his time in the wrestling ring as The Rock was a major star in WWE.
Given his enormous star power and history in the sport, Johnson would be an intriguing selection as the leader of a potential third Space Jam. Sure, the title would have the change with the premise, but it could definitely make for an entertaining movie. Rather than taking on a team of supercharged athletes on the basketball court, The Rock could rally the Looney Tunes for a royal rumble in the wrestling ring. It would certainly open things up for more hilarious acts and wild antics.
