Southampton v Everton LIVE stream: Toffees eager to end St Mary’s terrible run as Hasenhuttl seeks to avoid repeating Hughes’ record – kick-off time, team news, how to follow

Southampton host Everton in the Premier League on Saturday as top-flight football returns.

September has been a disrupted month in the English Premier League due to the death of Queen Elizabeth and the international break.

There have been encouraging signs for Frank Lampard in recent games

But top-flight football is back, and the Saints are heading into it after two defeats in which they failed to score and would need a win to move up the table.

Meanwhile, the Toffees have looked in much better shape in recent weeks, recording back-to-back clean sheets in their win over West Ham and draw with Liverpool.

Conor Coady and James Tarkowski solidified the defense and Everton were competitive in every game to relieve the pressure on Frank Lampard.

However, they have lost seven of their last nine visits to St Mary’s and are due to end that run this weekend.

Southampton v Everton: team news

The hosts will be without Tino Livramento and Romeo Lavia.

Lavia has a hamstring injury but is expected to return in mid-October, while Livarmento is recovering from an ACL.

Che Adams missed Scotland’s game against the Republic of Ireland through illness but started against Ukraine in the Nations League on Tuesday.

Duje Caleta-Car is yet to make his Premier League debut for Saints but could get his chance on Saturday.

Everton will be without Nathan Patterson for potentially six weeks after suffering a nasty ankle injury on international duty.

Seamus Coleman will likely replace Patterson.

Brazilian midfielder Allan has joined Al Wahda on a permanent transfer.

Jordan Pickford, Andros Townsend, Mason Holgate, Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina remain on the sidelines, meaning Tarkowski and Coady will continue in the heart of defence.

  • Everton have lost seven of their last nine away league matches against Southampton (W2), more than in their previous 22 such visits to Saints (W8 D8 L6).

Only twice under Ralph Hasenhüttl have the Saints failed to score in three consecutive league games, December 2020 (D2 L1) and September 2021 (D2 L1). Indeed, they last lost three consecutive games in the top flight without scoring in October 2018 under Mark Hughes.
  • Everton are currently enjoying their longest Premier League unbeaten run under Frank Lampard (5 games – W1 D4); their longest such run since December 2020 (W4 D1). The Toffees haven’t enjoyed a longer unbeaten streak in a single season since November/December 2017 (7 games – W4 D3).
  • Southampton recorded their first home league win of the season in their last such game against Chelsea (2-1) and could register successive league wins at St. Mary’s for the first time since February, when they beat Everton and Norwich 2-0.
  • Everton have kept a clean sheet in their last two Premier League games (against Liverpool and West Ham) – the last time they went three consecutive clean sheets in the competition was in March 2021 under Carlo Ancelotti , in a run that included a 1-0 win over Southampton.
  • Southampton have conceded the first goal of a match in more Premier League games than any other team this season (6), each having appeared in the last six matches in the competition. They last conceded the first goal in consecutive Premier League games between August and October 1998 (8).
  • Two of Adam Armstrong’s three Premier League goals for Southampton have come at St. Mary’s, including in their last game against Chelsea. Southampton have not had a player tally in successive home league games since Armando Broja in October 2021.
  • Everton’s Demarai Gray has had more ball runs ending in a shot than any other Premier League player this season (9). However, he has not scored any of his last 23 such efforts in the competition, since winning the winner against Arsenal in December 2021.
  • Everton’s Neal Maupay scored his first goal for the club against West Ham last time out, ending their longest Premier League scoreless streak (12 games).
