COLUMBIA, SC – State Police on Monday confirmed they have opened an investigation into the missing money which a law firm says was taken by a lawyer from a prominent South Carolina legal family whose wife and the son were killed at their home three months ago.
Monday’s announcement means that alongside the death investigation, the state’s Law Enforcement Division has four other ongoing investigations into Alex Murdaugh and his family. Meanwhile, his lawyer’s license was suspended indefinitely by the South Carolina Supreme Court.
“I continue to urge the public to be patient and let this investigation take its course. The investigative decisions we make throughout this case and any potentially related matters must ultimately withstand the scrutiny of the criminal justice process, ”said the head of the law enforcement division. State, Mark Keel, in a two paragraph ad.
The Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick PA (PMPED) law firm announced earlier this month that Murdaugh had embezzled money from the company and was no longer a partner at the firm. The exact amount of money that could be missing has not been made public.
Just days after reporting a gunshot wound to the head, it became public that Murdaugh had been charged with embezzlement, had resigned from the powerful law firm his family had helped establish, and had announced he was entering. rehab.

Murdaugh released a statement two days later, stating, “The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life. I made a lot of decisions that I really regret. I am resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that was exacerbated by these murders. I am immensely sorry for everyone I have hurt, including my family, friends and colleagues. I ask for prayers as I rehabilitate myself and rehabilitate my relationships. “
The law firm said in a statement last week that Murdaugh had resigned. “His resignation came after the PMPED discovered that Alex had embezzled funds in violation of PMPED standards and policies,” the statement said.
“An accounting firm will be retained to conduct an in-depth investigation. The police and the SC bar have been informed by the PMPED,” the statement added. “This is disappointing news for all of us.”
