Sony to launch 50MP Sony A9 with 8K video in early 2021: report – PetaPixel

Over the past week, several rumor sites have reported that Sony is actively developing a new Sony a9 full frame mirrorless camera that could be described as a “Canon R5 Killer”. The camera will feature a 50MP sensor, shoot 8K video, and release in the first quarter of 2021.

The original rumor arose Photographic rumors, where it has been described as a “new high-end camera” with a professional housing, 9.44 million dot EVF, newly developed sensor, 8K video, IBIS, dual card slots and the new system menu of the recently released Sony a7S III.

The report was originally called a “bull s ** t” by a competing rumor site. Sony Alpha Rumors, but SAR has since been forced to go back after a “trusted source” who has shared specific information in the past confirmed the rumor and shared a few more details about the upcoming camera. Given that there are now two (controversial) reports that confirm each other, we are pretty confident about this one.

The new camera looks like a very high resolution Sony a7S III. It will almost certainly use the same hybrid card slot technology.

According to the latest information from SAR, the camera will feature a 50MP sensor and it will be called either the Sony a9S or the Sony a9III. Most of the case specs will be similar to the Sony a7S III, but the much higher resolution sensor and thermal design of the camera will allow it to shoot 8K / 30p video “without overheating”.

Photographic rumors brings in a prize of approximately $ 6,000; Sony Alpha Rumors claims the price has yet to be finalized, but expects this camera to cost between $ 5,000 and $ 5,500. Both sites expect the camera to be announced in the first quarter of 2021, in time for the photographer to test it at next year’s Olympics, assuming they won’t be postponed again. .

That’s all we know at the moment. With the official release still several months away, expect further leaks to slowly spread by early 2021, when rumors are likely to accelerate significantly. In the meantime, drop into the comments and let us know what’s on your “Sony a9 III” wishlist.
