Sony slipped a bunch of BMW E39 M5s into Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

The world of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is canonically one of the best places for car enthusiasts. Not only because there is new Yugosbut also because of the disproportionate number of BMW E39 M5 models strolling casually New York City, be bold enough to park in the Big Apple despite not having the “spider sense” of Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

This is Thanksgiving, which means we’re all going to eat turkey and watch movies; obviously that means gearheads are going to have fun car cameos. bicycles, too. So I’m gonna need you to review Into the Spider-Verse, which features some of the coolest animations we’ve seen in a Marvel movie so far, and because it’s a real treasure trove for car enthusiasts with its cast of Lexus sedans, VW Golfs and even Ford Excursions. There are the new Yugos, of course, and the BMW M5the specific model that is arguably one of the best BMWs of all time.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE: First 9 Minute Film – Now on Blu-ray and Digital!

In the opening minutes of the film, there are numerous sightings of E39 M5. First, as Peter Parker saves the city countless times and reminds us of his squeaky dance. Then later, as the adorable Miles Morales walks to school. Parker’s Spider-Man hits what looks like an M5 in the opening seconds, which doesn’t bode well if that was the only cameo, but it isn’t.

BMWs keep popping up, and it makes me think someone at Sony Pictures Imageworks is a big fan of the E39 M5. It’s obvious that the artists behind the film were trying to be efficient with their animation and reusing objects wherenever possible. This makes perfect sense for taxis and police cruisers, which all seem to be modeled after the beloved Ford Panther Platform.

But inserting such a distinctive sports car as the BMW E39 M5 had to be a deliberate choice. It’s not like the E39 M5 is that square or simple to render in the film’s unique art style. If that were the case, every car in the Spider-verse would need something less complex, like a Volkswagen Jetta marks fouror Jeep Comanche, or Chevrolet Corvette C4. Clean lines.

And yet, the BMW E39 M5 is so often represented in the background of the film that it marked me. It’s probably because I’m always looking for 90s BMWs and such in every movie I watch. I developed a sort of Bav-dar, I guess. Did you know World War Z has a 318ti, for example? Either way, check it out spider worms again and revel in the world sony created, full of some of the best sedans and hatchbacks of the 2000s.
