Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights for the third edition of the Lanka Premier League 2022. The broadcaster will secure the TV rights across the entire Indian subcontinent including India, Pakistan, India. Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal and the Maldives, as well as digital. rights for India and Sri Lanka.
The tournament which was due to start in August 2022 had been postponed due to unrest in Sri Lanka. Its first season was also supposed to start in September 2018, but was repeatedly postponed and also delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic. It finally started in November 2020.
Anil Mohan, Founder and CEO of IPG, the official promoter of LPL, said: “Sri Lanka have always been proud of their heritage and passion for cricket and we couldn’t be happier to have him taken away. in all regions of the world through some of the renowned broadcasters in the sector. “The league will start on December 6 and will feature five teams – Colombo Stars, Dambulla Aura, Galle Gladiators, Jaffna Kings and Kandy Falcons. The two-time champions Jaffna Kings will be managed by Thisara Perera and will also have the versatile Wanindu Hasaranga.
Last month, former cricketers Sanath Jayasuriya and Wasim Akram along with Viv Richards were named the league’s brand ambassadors for its upcoming third edition.
SPNI was formerly known as Culver Max Entertainment Private Limited, which is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation, Japan. The league’s third season will air on Sony Sports Ten 1 and Sony Sports Ten 5 channels.
