Amazon Prime announced in December that it was doing a live-action adaptation of the wildly popular God of War game series. Although details are scarce at this point, a Sony executive has given a positive update for the upcoming series.
The upcoming TV show will span the world of Kratos and Atreus.
Sony Pictures Television recently found success with the live-action adaptation of The Last of Us. Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television, recently sat down with Deadline to talk about projects such as The Last of Us and Cobra Kai, briefly discussing the upcoming God of War TV series on Amazon Prime Video.
Pope didn’t share many details about God of War but did discuss the progress of the live-action adaptation. She revealed that the project is still in its early stages and sticks to the source material.
“There’s a lot of really important IP here, we’re working on God of War, the PlayStation title, which is still in its early stages,” Pope explained. “I know the game pretty well, and I’m so impressed with what they’re already doing in terms of building and expanding this world, keeping all the values of the game but also expanding it so that if you don’t know the game, it’s still going to be a really satisfying show on its own.”

Being faithful to the source material was the crucial factor in the success of The Last of Us on HBO. It looks like Sony is sticking to that formula with God of War. The game has a compelling storyline and contains a fair amount of drama interspersed between the high-octane action sequences.
Pope also pointed out that the show is still in the early stages of production. This means that it may take some time before audiences can see the adaptation live.
Based on the timelines of previous live-action adaptations, it’s likely that pre-production on God of War will be complete before the end of the year. We’re guessing the show will start filming by 2024 and should be ready to stream on Amazon Prime by mid-2025 at the earliest. This is purely an assumption on our part, however, and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Either way, it’s exciting for fans to hear that Sony is sticking to important story elements while expanding the world of Kratos and Atreus.
One important piece of information fans want to know is who will be playing Kratos in the TV series. Sony has yet to reveal the cast of God of War as of writing. Hopefully we’ll have more information about the TV show in the coming months.
