Atomos has finally announced the availability of ProRes RAW support for the Sony FX9. You will be able to record ProRes RAW to SDI externally on the Atomos Shogun 7. This comes in the form of the AtomOS V10.42 firmware update which is free to download.
Sony recently released firmware version 2.0 for the FX9 which allowed the camera to output RAW over SDI, however, until now there was no way it could be recorded. Atomos and Sony have been teasing the ProRes RAW recording on the Shogun 7 from the FX9 since July.
It takes two to tango
The catch is, you still have to buy the ridiculously large and expensive Sony XDCA-FX9 expansion unit for US $ 2,495, as well as an Atomos Shogun 7 for US $ 1299 to be able to do that. The total entry cost for recording ProRes RAW from the FX9 is $ 3,794, and that does not include an SSD drive.
Why Sony continues to go down this path of adding expensive and bulky expansion units to output RAW from some of their cameras is still a mystery. It hardly makes sense when a camera like the Panasonic EVA1 can output uncompressed RAW via 6G SDI. The EVA1 can record ProRes RAW in 5.7K at 1fps at 30fps, 4K at 1fps at 60fps, and 2K at 1fps at 240fps.
What can you save?
The Atomos Shogun 7 is capable of recording Apple ProRes RAW up to DCI 4Kp60, or in 2K up to DCI 2Kp180 continuously.
FX9 ProRes RAW files will have built-in metadata. Apple’s Final Cut Pro X and other NLEs will recognize ProRes RAW files recorded by the Shogun 7 from the FX9’s RAW output and allow them to be configured for editing and viewing in SDR projects or HDR. Additional information will also allow other software to make important parameter adjustments.
The lack of full ProRes RAW metadata support for some cameras is still an ongoing issue. Some cameras that output RAW include metadata so that things like ISO, color temperature, and exposure offset can be adjusted in some NLEs and software. The problem is that not all cameras have this built-in metadata and some NLE programs and software do not have the extensive controls for ProRes RAW.
