Sony announced the new Sony FE 16-25mm f/2.8G zoom lens (buy here) at NAB 2024. Its 16-25mm focal length provides an ultra-wide to still ultra-wide-angle field of view with a constant f/2.8. maximum opening everywhere.
It’s a versatile ultra-wide-angle zoom that should be as comfortable during a low-light event as it is when shooting landscapes. And although designed for full-frame E-mount lenses, it still offers a useful focal range on APS-C.
Sony FE 16-25mm f/2.8 G – Compact and ultra-wide
The new FE 16-25mm f/2.8 G from Sony is a compact and lightweight ultra-wide lens. It measures just 74.8 x 91.4mm and accepts 67mm threaded filters. Compared to zooms of the same width over the years, we are fortunate to have a filter.
When we get filter threads, they are usually at least 77mm, so they are very compact. It’s also quite light, weighing just 409g. While you will definitely notice the weight, it is not so heavy that it interferes with your shooting ability or technique.
This is the second lens in Sony’s f/2.8 G series. It joins the Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens (buy here) announced in February.
Its bright, wide and consistent f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range makes it ideal for shooting indoor events and weddings. f/2.8 lets in a lot of light, allowing you to get decent shutter speeds without having to raise your ISO too high.
And if you stop it down to f/8, it should perform about as well as any other lens of similar focal length for things like landscapes. At this type of aperture, all lenses are sharpest.
