Sony and OM Digital have events scheduled for late October, which suggests that the Sony A7R V and OM Digital OM-5 camera bodies should be announced very soon. There have been a handful of OM-5 leaks with a possible announcement at some point this month, but no specific date was previously mentioned. Now, their OM SYSTEM PLAZA Fan Event 2022” is coming October 29-30 in Tokyo, Japan.
The Sony Creative Space 2022 event is set to take place in New York City on October 27-28, which makes the rumored October 26 announcement date quite plausible. This is usually when Sony holds its own event in conjunction with PhotoPlus Expo (or “Create NYC” as it’s now known), but with the event canceled this year, it looks like Sony has pushed back its date to later in October. .
Naturally, there’s been no official word from either company that there will, for sure, be any upcoming camera announcements, but given recent rumors, the timing is pretty handy. for both. OM Digital in particular has really needed to flesh out its range since taking over from Olympus and an OM-5 has been on the cards for some time now. The OM Digital OM-1 has been generally well received by Olympus shooters, so hopefully they’ll be able to maintain that kind of response.
As for Sony, well, the A7R IV came out in 2019, so it’s not really that old, but the new technology in the A7S III, A7 IV, A1, FX30 and other recent cameras is notably missing the A7R IV – not to mention the menu system – so it makes sense that they would want to refresh that system now.
The exact features and specs we’ll see from both companies, however, are still largely a mystery. But it looks like we won’t have long to wait to find out!
