Sonic Automotive CEO David Bruton Smith accused of strangling woman

Sonic Automotive CEO David Bruton Smith was arrested Monday in Charlotte and charged with multiple crimes, including assault on a woman and assault by strangulation.

According to records from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office website, Smith was released on Monday afternoon. Charlotte’s efforts Observer for both reaching Smith and getting a police report on Wednesday failed.

A spokesperson for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department told the Observer that “the victim stated that the suspect attacked and illegally immobilized her without her consent.”

Smith’s brother, Marcus, is the managing director of Charlotte Motor Speedway, which will host NASCAR races this weekend.

Marcus and David are both the son of Bruton Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports and NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee.
