Suzann Pettersen will lead Europe in back-to-back Solheim Cups after being announced as skipper for the 2024 event in the United States.
The two-time Norwegian winner had already been named captain for the defense of this year’s trophy.
The 2023 event takes place September 22-24 at Finca Cortesin on the Costa del Sol.
Europe are aiming for an unprecedented treble of wins after successes at Gleneagles in 2019 and Inverness Club in Ohio in 2021.
Matches between Europe and the United States are usually played on a biennial basis. However, with the men’s Ryder Cup moving to odd years following the covid postponement of the 2020 contest at Whistling Straits, the Solheim Cup switches to even years in September 2024.
Europe is following America’s lead in appointing the same captain for matches which are now held in consecutive years, with Stacy Lewis at the helm of the American line-up in Spain this fall and again in America next year.
“I love the Solheim Cup and it’s a unique honor to be asked to lead the European team again in 2024,” said Pettersen, 41.
“Being offered the role a second time before the 2023 matches have even been played is a bit different from usual, as we usually play the competition every two years and announce the next captain after the competition.
“But due to the changes to the schedule and back-to-back Solheim Cups in back-to-back years, it makes perfect sense.”
The 2024 Solheim Cup will take place at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia from September 10-15.
“To date, my captaincy in 2023 has been pure joy, so being able to lead the team in Europe this year and then again next year in the United States, near the nation’s capital, will be a great honor,” added Pettersen.
“Suzann was a natural choice to lead the Solheim 2024 European Cup team,” said Alexandra Armas, Managing Director of the Ladies European Tour. “She is doing a superb job in her preparation for the 2023 Solheim Cup in Spain.”
Pettersen succeeded Scotland’s Catriona Matthew as Europe captain and netted the winning putt at Gleneagles in the last of his nine Solheim Cup appearances.
She has 21 professional victories including major successes at the 2007 LPGA Championship and the 2013 Evian Championship.
