After launching Citigoe iV, the company’s first electric vehicle, Skoda has been spotted putting the finishing touches on what will become its second zero-emission model. We first set our eyes on the high performance electric vehicle in October 2019 when a test mule carrying the body of a Volkswagen Tiguan was seen stretching at the Nürburgring.
Fast forward this week, the prototype spotted on a Czech road near the company’s headquarters in Mladá Boleslav seems to have the entire production body hidden under a rather deceptive camouflage. Skoda usually comes out with prototypes wearing this kind of disguise closer to the revelation of the model, so an official start could take place in the coming months.
On the same MEB platform as the next VW ID.4, the Enyaq will follow the attractive Vision iV concept introduced about a year ago at the Geneva Motor Show. While not as exciting as the previous showcar, the electric vehicle should be a bit more spicy than the company’s conventional SUVs, such as the Karoq or the Kodiaq. One thing I would add is that if the concept has had coupe influences, the production car will be more in the spirit of a large wagon.
While the aforementioned Citigo is exclusively front-wheel drive, the Enyaq will adopt an RWD layout and could offer an AWD variant since VW has already promised to introduce an ID.4 on all fours. After all, the Vision iV mentioned above (photo below) had an electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear.
Speaking of the concept, Skoda said it would make up to 311 miles (500 kilometers) by WLTP, which is the same number promised by VW a few days ago for the production-ready ID.4. When it comes to horsepower, the Vision iV with its twin-engine configuration produces good health of 302 hp (225 kW), but it goes without saying that single-engine variants with RWD will have to settle for fewer electric ponies.
To return to the spy photos at hand, our photographers were also able to take a look inside the cabin where we can observe that the dashboard is a significant departure from the current models of Skoda. A large central screen dominates the cockpit, while the driver’s instrument cluster is flat and wide. Where have we seen this before? Yes, on the Vision iV, we keep mentioning. If you squint, the Enyaq type reveals itself on the touch screen.
Interestingly, the prototype seemed to have an old-fashioned mechanical handbrake and we notice that it borrowed the new steering wheel design from the Octavia 2020. The center console also looks fairly familiar if you follow the Skoda brand in recent years, and this on / off button has been around for a while. Knowing the relationship between VW and Skodas, the Enyaq should be more spacious and more affordable than the ID.4, but less sophisticated.
An official revelation is expected to take place later this year, with sales slated to begin in 2021.
